How to Choose an Engagement Shoot Outfit That Will Photograph Well

July 14, 2020

Choosing outfits for your engagement shoot is essential to you as a couple. After all, these photos are going to be a large component of the announcement that you’re getting married! To cut the stress that can consume this decision-making process, make sure you pick your outfit far enough in advance so that there is no last minute scrambling! We’ve outline some practical tips below that will hopefully help you out:

Keep In mind the Color Scheme:

When picking your outfit for the engagement shoot, make sure you keep in mind the location of the shoot. You want the style and colors of your outfit to look cohesive with the environment of your location. For example, you wouldn’t want to wear a bright orange dress to a forest location! While staying cohesive with the environment, make sure there is enough contrast that you don’t completely blend into the background. You want to stand out without looking completely out of place. This couple does a good job of staying with neutral, spring colors that allows the greenery around them to pop.

Don’t match your partner:

Coordinating looks better than matching! You want to look like you belong next to each other without looking identical. When choosing outfits, play off the colors and styles found in each of the outfits. For example if you wear an outfit with a print that focuses on a dark green, your partner can incorporate that green into their outfit. This couple does a good job of coordinating without looking like twins in matching navy outfits.

Incorporate one accessory into your look:

Accessories are a good way to add pops of color and fun to a look. Plus you can take them off to change a look at mix up the photographs. Seasonal accessories are also a good way to make a statement depending on your location. If your shoot takes place in the fall, you could add a scarf or plaid shirt. If it’s a place like a beach, you could add nautical elements to your look. The flower she’s holding is a great example of this because it serves as an accessory and a pop of color to boost her look. She can also add it to her hair as an optional element!

Most importantly, choose outfits that you’re comfortable in:

The camera can pick up on whether your comfortable or uncomfortable. Pick an outfit that you know looks great and feels great so you can exude that confidence in the photos. Nothing looks worse or more awkward in a photo than discomfort! Next, don’t pick an outfit just because it’s trendy or someone else wants you to wear it for the photos. Make sure that both you and your partner are happy with how you look and that your wardrobe reflect your personality as couple! Whether full glam or cozy and comfy, as long as you love your outfit, it’ll most definitely show.
