Andre and Andre and Jamilla jumped into their new life together in their wedding at The Ritz Carlton! We filmed their engagement during Andre’s birthday celebration a couple of years ago and the memory still makes us smile! Surrounded by the people who had shown them examples of strong unions, Andre and Jamilla committed to forever together!
Weddings are a time when people choose to either continue family traditions or create unique experiences of their own! Andre and Jamilla chose to seal their union by jumping the broom! This tradition has been a part of the African American community for many decades. Today, it’s a symbol of stepping into a new beginning by sweeping away the past!
Couples usually jump the broom done at the end of the ceremony. The officiant will declare when by explaining the meaning of the tradition, or even a poem. Then, the happy couple will hold hands and leap into their new lives together! The origin of this tradition is not certain, but it became a way for African Americans to symbolize their union before they were granted the opportunity to be legally married.
Couples continue this tradition by decorating a small broom with ribbons, flowers, or other meaningful decorations. These brooms can be kept in the family and passed down for future generations! Some couples view this as a way of honoring ancestors. Like all traditions, it comes down to personal choice. Jumping the broom is not a requirement for the ceremony, but it is definitely a beautiful tradition that many couples enjoy every year!
